If you are like me you will be asking yourself, should I stick with the iPad or should I upgrade to the iPad2? And if you will be purchasing the iPad for the first time then you will be wondering which one you should choose. Let’s examine the two versions of the iPad.
The differences
While there are 3 main differences between the iPad 2 and the iPad, the similarities bookmark php are a lot more common. They both have same screen size and display (1024 x 76
, the same storage options, same number of connections (Wifi, Wireless), and they both have the same battery life. So what are the key differences?

Finally the iPad currently will not be the main device in my life as I still need a computer, so given this fact most of the advanced features I will use on my notebook computer because it is where I spend most of my time. This also brings in another debate, , but that’s another blog?
Conclusion
In short, the iPad will be sold at a discount to the iPad 2 ($100 less), comes in the same package, has most of the features of the iPad 2 and the additional features which do come on the iPad 2, I’m not buying. So for me the upgrade question is simple, not now.
When the iPad was finally revealed in 2010, it took time for the market to know how to categorize the device; everyone settled on simply creating a new category.
One year on, the lead that Apple has is a replay of its iPod-iPhone momentum, but Google’s Android caught up quickly. This year will be a truly fascinating one of winners and losers. Not interested? You should be. Media tablets have re-written the rules.
iPad. You can do everything you want on one really. If you’re a high-end originator of Photoshop masterpieces or an individual with particularly fat fingers, you might not be so convinced, but if you try one for a reasonable period of time you’ll start to get frustrated with the boot-up time of your old laptop, the lack of software apps to enhance your entertainment or productivity and the whole battery-cable-charger-airport-connectivity thing.
Give the human race 20 years and the laptops we all lug around will seem as ancient as the clay tablets the Assyrians used to record cuneiform lists of goats, gold and slaves. We’re witnessing the next evolution of computing and something on par with the mouse and graphical user interface computing milestones of the 1970s.
Tablets are more in tune with the way we all consume and interact with data. Are you a reviewer or an originator? If you think about how you shuffle emails and comments up and down the food chain from the comfort of your queue at Starbucks, you’ll recognize that we have become much more accepting of the cloud and computing convenience. Remember when people used to print out and file emails for their records?
According to the (IDC) Worldwide Quarterly Media Tablet and eReader Tracker, vendors shipped 4.8 million units globally in the third quarter of 2010, compared to 3.3 million units in the second quarter. Apple’s iPad represented nearly 90 percent of the media tablets shipped worldwide in 3Q10.
“The media tablet market’s rapid evolution will continue to accelerate … with new product and service introductions, channel expansion, price competition and experimentation with new use cases among consumers and enterprises,†said IDC’s , research director, mobile connected devices.
So what about your eReader Kindle: Does it factor in to this multi-million-user revolution? Well, no. According to IDC, media tablets are tablet-form-factor devices with color displays larger than five inches and smaller than 14 inches running lightweight operating systems (such as Apple’s iOS and Google’s Android OS) and based on either x86 or ARM processors.
By contrast, tablet PCs (think full Windows) run full PC operating systems and are based on x86 processors. Media tablets support multiple connectivity technologies and a broad range of applications, which differentiates them from single purpose-focused devices such as eReaders. That’s where your Kindle comes in (if you still have one).
So, keeping a focus on the media tablet market, the train has well and truly left the station and there are many vendors looking to stoke up to catch the next train. Google’s Android operating system for smartphones when deployed on a tablet was a pretty desperate grab at the handrail of the last carriage on the Apple express. Samsung’s initial Galaxy Tab was pulled from U.K. market after a high level of returns, while Toshiba’s Folio device was withdrawn completely. Neither offering was as intuitive and popular as Apple’s iOS.
Google’s new Android operating system for tablets, codenamed Honeycomb, is the next wave of development. Motorola is expected to release a media tablet running on Honeycomb called the Xoom, while Research in Motion (RIM) will start marketing is its BlackBerry PlayBook slate. Hewlett-Packard will concentrate its efforts on a device that runs its own WebOS operating system. Good luck with that one, HP.
Apple has more than 350,000 apps for the iPhone, iPad and iPod touch, while 60,000 apps are specifically designed for the iPad. Android has approximately 130,000 apps, most of them having been designed for smartphones, great for Android’s Nokia-killing handset manufacturers, not so good for media tablets. Google will have to encourage developers to create apps for the new Honeycomb OS, as will RIM.
RIM announced that it plans to introduce in-app purchases, which is smart; this gives developers the ability to up-sell enhancements and smaller upgrades between major version releases, which helps to sustain churn revenues. “It will be a smaller ecosystem of players led by Android and Apple in the near term,â€, mobile analyst at , commented recently in the Financial Times. RIM’s Blackberry is currently the U.K.’s most popular smartphone for business users, so they know what they’re doing.
An interesting development of these market shifts is the channel. Apple sells direct and has direct relationships with customers via its online and high-street stores. Other players will have to navigate the support and manage the challenges of working with third parties – resellers, retailers and developers. Yet again, Apple appears to have got it right. It has never cracked the corporate market, however, although with its ownership of its own chipset, hardware, software, OS and digital content, this could be the company’s chance to really take its share of the corporate marketplace from the old guard of laptop manufacturers such as Lenovo, Toshiba and HP.
Looking forward, IDC forecasts 44.6 million media tablets will ship in 2011, with the U.S. representing nearly 40 percent of the total. In 2012, IDC forecasts worldwide shipments of 70.8 million units. Growth in 2011 and beyond will be driven by device vendors introducing media tablets based on Android and other operating systems, as well as price and feature competition and strong demand in both the consumer and commercial segments.
For the e-reader market, IDC anticipates 2010 to close at 10.8 million units shipped worldwide, with the U.S. representing 72.4 percent of global shipments. IDC forecasts 14.7 million units to ship in 2011 and 16.6 million in 2012.
What does this mean for us all? It means that computing has changed in the space of a year – the desktop, the laptop and the smartphone have become integrated. This is a great time to build new applications and revenue. It’s also time for corporations to start planning IT strategies around mobile devices for the whole shooting match – security, AV, application version control, licensing, HR, surf control, proprietary app conversion and so forth.
The market will change before our eyes this year and next. Ignoring these developments is not a great idea.

Recently, bookmark php my office and teamed up on a that addresses precisely this issue, mapping the way forward for meaningful privacy protection in the mobile space by providing practical advice for embedding the principles of Privacy by Design (PbD) into mobile technologies and applications.
Our report builds on the findings of original research conducted by ASU’s new PbD Research Lab. Researchers convened an expert panel bookmark php of top executives from leading mobile organizations to identify and rate privacy and security challenges in their rapidly-expanding field, and propose potential solutions grounded in real-world experiences.
Using the solutions identified by this expert panel, our outlines key privacy responsibilities for each major stakeholder group in the industry – while noting that parties will have to collaborate to develop the most effective solutions. For example, device manufacturers must ensure that the requisite privacy tools are built-in, using potential solutions such as automatic, seamless encryption of device data, the development of privacy wizards, and safe disposal and secure destruction mechanisms. Similarly, OS and platform developers must work on possible approaches such as the integration of fine-grained, cross-application privacy controls, reporting mechanisms and regulating the access that applications have to device data. However, neither can fully implement these protections without the other party.
The responsibilities of network providers, application developers/data processors, and users are also addressed, as are areas in which full-sector collaboration is required in order to, for example, develop privacy standards, develop and deploy consumer-facing privacy icons, and build user awareness of potential privacy issues through education efforts.
In addition to tracing the way forward for privacy in the mobile sector, the Roadmap also demonstrates the extent to which “Privacy by Design is a team sport.â€Â All parties have a role to play, both on their own and in partnership with others.
In the context of mobile communications, if device hardware does not allow for the implementation of a given privacy measure, the OS or platform does not support it, or the user does not know about it, then that protection cannot be effective. This message will hold true for every implementation of Privacy by Design, regardless of industry sector – collaboration is essential, and will benefit all involved.

One day last week, I tweeted the message you see to the right because I was tickled by the email that came in. In my bookmark php haste, however, I added a snappy hashtag and thereby made the same common mistake I often accuse marketers — even branding experts — of making.
The prospect who sent me that email remembered how I look. I will be the first to admit that a red — okay, rapidly greying — pony tail, full-but-tidy beard and what used to be a curly moustache do tend to set me apart from the average corporate consultant, even in the less-buttoned-down realm of marketing. Based on how I look, he was able to easily remember who I am.
He wasn’t, however, looking for a pony-tailed, bearded guy; he was, in fact, looking for a PR firm. And, because of whatever impression about my abilities as a PR guy that I had left with him during a past engagement, he immediately thought of me.
In that nutshell, then, you have the difference between branding and visual identity, something that, as I said at the opening, many marketers and not a few so-called branding experts often confuse.
The best explanation of branding I have ever heard came from , an early investor in Google whose pithy and dead-on definition I will never forget. “Branding,” he said, “Is what people think about you when you’re not there.” That’s exactly what happened with that prospect last week. In my absence, this chap thinks of me as a good bookmark php person to turn to for their new PR requirements. That’s my brand to him and, thankfully, it’s both clearly memorable and what I would want it to be in this instance.
How I look, arguably also memorable, is my visual identity. And, while it might contribute to my brand — successfully, if it suggests I’m not a conventional thinker — it ain’t my brand.
Far too often, in my experience, marketers confuse one with the other, with the result that the so-called branding strategies they develop for their clients are actually little more than graphic standards manuals that explain why the various elements of the company’s visual identity exist and how they’re going to be governed.
Many of these manuals further torque the error by seeking to define the company’s brand, and this is where the exercise becomes even more misguided. Companies don’t define their brand; the marketplace does that for them. The most any company can do is define a set of brand attributes by which it would like to be known and then do its very best to live up to those attributes, something I call the company’s “brand promise.” The degree to which the company lives up to its brand promise in every single thing it does is exactly the degree to which it will be branded by the marketplace as it would want to be.

But with auto makers integrating more tech features into their new car models every year, that is about to change.

Made to comply with hands-free driving legislation in place across many provinces and states, auto makers have created innovative user interfaces and drivers are getting used to the idea of having them in their cars.

While most (62.4 per cent) still are like me, and drive tech-free rides, many are using IT products behind the wheel.
The most popular tech being used was GPS navigation (16.2 per cent) and Bluetooth connectivity (15.8 per cent). That makes sense, since drivers often have a need to know where they are going and to talk on the phone while staying safe and avoiding getting ticketed by police. Another nine per cent of Canadians have voice-activated features in their cars and six per cent have touch screen consoles.

The reality of many urban workers today is a lot of time sitting in traffic at snail’s pace – why not try to make the best use of that time?

Nonetheless, government does have an important role to play in the value chain of bringing technology to market. This is particularly true at the regional and municipal level, where local economic development agencies attempt to attract anchor employers and/or support the growth of home-grown technology ventures with programs and incentives funded by the local tax base and higher levels of government. (We will explore the broader role of government in a future post.)
These efforts, however, raise a few fundamental questions:

Is it possible for an organization funded by the public purse and influenced by the bureaucratic culture of government to keep its finger on the pulse of a dynamic, even volatile, technology market?

Import vs. domestic

A grow-your-own strategy, in which the emphasis is on creating and growing local companies; and

Doyle argues that the importation approach seldom works. However, moving ahead with either, or a combination of both, of these strategies, is not the end of the discussion. Far from it. As we explored in the previous post, Silicon Valley is arguably the hotbed of innovation that startups must tap into in today’s recession weary global economy to obtain what they need to bring technology to market.
Too much bread, too little peanut butter?
It is hardly practical, or desirable, for most startups to pull up stakes and relocate to California, despite the preference among many Valley VCs that their portfolio companies do so. What these startups require is help finding the resources crucial to their success that lie beyond their own backyard. But many organizations involved in startup incubation at the local level are not in a position to provide this.
“Often, the peanut butter gets spread too thin,†said , managing partner of and co-founder of the . “Too many smaller organizations don’t have truly world-class people running the show who understand what it is to be competitive on a global stage. If an incubator is 18 months behind what is going on in Silicon Valley, its companies are not going to succeed. It’s just spinning its wheels.â€
Instead, he applauds the best-of-breed models that have emerged in Canada, such as in Toronto and in Vancouver. [Update: Bootup Labs closed its accelerator fund late last year, a few months after our interview with Albinson.] Both organizations are staffed by strategic advisors, drawn from the business and investment communities, who can provide startups with the hands on mentorship that will help them get ahead.
“These guys are plugged in, aggressive and credible,†Albinson said. “They really add value to the companies they work with.â€
believes that government, no matter how good its intentions, should remain on the sidelines and focus instead on providing a supportive framework. At the regional level, two key ways to help is through tax breaks and by providing real estate at a low cost.
Glaros is a general manager for , a mentorship-driven seed stage investment organization that runs programs in Boston, Boulder, New York City and Seattle.
“The good thing about the entrepreneur community is that it is quick and nimble and can make things happen,†Glaros told us in an interview last year. But when government takes too direct a hand, the bureaucratic and administrative burden that invariably builds can end up more of a hindrance than a help.
Pointers from Pittsburgh
But that is not to say that a government-funded effort is doomed as a matter of course. One example of government policy at work that helps savvy entrepreneurs do what they do best without getting in the way is and its seed acceleration program, .
Innovation Works deems itself the Pittsburgh region’s largest and most active seed-stage investor. Since 1999, it has invested more than $50 million in more than 150 companies.
IW is a private non-profit corporation, which is largely funded by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania’s Ben Franklin Technology Development Authority. Its AlphaLab is described as “a catalyst for launching and accelerating the growth of the next generation of software, web, mobile, entertainment technology, and hardware companies.†IW receives five per cent common stock in an AlphaLab company in return for a $25,000 investment, plus workspace and services. As a non-profit, any financial returns IW is re-deployed into the community.
Despite IW’s status as a non-profit and its support by a state agency, it is anything but bureaucratic.
“While our funding comes from the state, we’re not part of the state government,†said AlphaLab director . “All of the employees at IW come from the private sector and investment management, with experience in running companies or launching software businesses.â€
So what does all this mean?
Government can play a vital role in supporting a robust and vibrant startup environment at the local level, provided it takes its lead from the business leaders who live on the cutting edge of the technology market.
The challenge for entrepreneurs is to be careful about coupling all of their cars to the wrong train, or even one train. Does the team at your local incubator or economic development agency possess the entrepreneurial expertise and insight that can only come from having “been there and done that?†Is it capable of making the linkages you need in a particular overseas market, or in Boston, or in Silicon Valley? Find out by talking to people from those places. Get connected to them through grass roots organizations such as the C100.
We have said many times (and will likely do so many times again) that a startup must connect with as many people as possible to find the right resources it needs to succeed. The key thing is to not be daunted by how far afield that search may take you. In our next installment, we will talk more about the entrepreneurial right stuff that it takes to succeed.

One of the big stories last week was the launch of Apple’s iPad 2. A survey by ITBusiness.ca showed that a majority of our readers would like to see Flash capabaility on Apple’s new tablet device.
Introduced by Apple CEO, Steve Jobs, who is currently on medical leave, the redesigned iPad is 33 per cent thinner than the current model yet sports a new dual core Apple A5 1GHz processor, 9 times the graphics processing capacity as well as a new gyroscope and rear plus front facing video cameras for FaceTime video calling.
The biggest news, however, was the iPad 2′s pricing and availability. Costing the same as the current iPad, the new version hits U.S. Â Apple retail stores and mobile carriers this Friday March 11 and will be available in Canada on March 25th.
This means that come April, iPad 2 will be widely distributed just as some of its competitors are readied for launch. Not only does the iPad 2 seem to cover all the lg mobile cla 305 car charger specification advantages of its Android-powered competitors (dual-core processors, HDMI video out, better graphics for gaming), it is the thinnest and lightest of the bunch and some would argue that it is  currently the cheapest and the most widely available 10-inch tablet.

I can tell you that Adobe Flash isn’t coming to the iPad anytime soon. We did get dual-cameras and a faster processor but a higher resolution screen brings a number of foreseeable problems. If they put any more, nobody would bother with future models.” Which is in line with what many analysts believe, that Apple boosted the feature set of the iPad 2 “just enough” for it to make its product more desirable than competing tablets which while announced, aren’t even shipping in bulk yet.

The scammer claimed that he needed the recipient’s help to retrieve $2.5 million of the president’s funds, frozen in a Belgian bank account. The scammer further claimed that he’ll pay for assistance.Â
The recent uncertainty about Mubarak’s whereabouts and health, as well as reports that many jurisdictions are considering seizing his assets, could perhaps lend credibility to this particular 419 scam.Â
As usual for many 419 scams, the message is poorly constructed and has probably been automatically translated into German. Our advanced monitoring systems alerted us to this scam. Although this type of mail is generally low volume, it can still be incase es86084 leather ipod 120g black a significant nuisance.Â
2022 World Cup scamÂ
The 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa was used by both 419/advance fee fraud scammers and malware authors to lure unsuspecting victims into handing over money or installing malware.Â

Last December, MessageLabs Intelligence saw two scams which claimed the recipient had won a lottery supposedly connected with the 2014 World Cup. We were surprised to see scams promoting an event so far in the future, so we were especially surprised to recently see a scam promoting the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. Evidently scammers are not concerned by the fact that the tournament is more than 10 years away.Â
The scam itself is fairly normal. The mail contains very little content in incase es86084 leather ipod 120g black the body; it simply encourages recipients to open the attached PDF document. The attachment was created with a popular open source office suite and claims that the recipient has won £1.5 million (roughly $2.41 million). The document contains a logo for the tournament as a watermark, and also contains a picture of FIFA president Sepp Blatter with Qatar Football Association president Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa bin Ahmed al-Thani.Â

The message encourages recipients to email the scammer to claim the money, or to phone a forwarding number, which often routes the call to the scammer abroad.Â
Welsh language scamÂ
While we have seen 419 scam mails constructed in many different languages such as German and French, in February, for the first time, we came across one written in Welsh.
 The content of the mail was typical of a 419 scam mail. The scammer poses as a widow of a Kuwaiti ambassador to the Ivory Coast with $2.5 million in a trust fund. The potential victim has to distribute some of the money to orphanages and the less privileged and in return, the scammer promises to make the victim a beneficiary of the fund.Â
It’s unlikely that the 419 scammer can read and write Welsh so it’s probable the mail was written in English and then translated into Welsh using an automated language translation website. It’s unknown why the scammer would have chosen Welsh when this language is read by a relatively small number of people, but further analysis revealed that the recipient in this case was actually based in Wales.Â
Moreover, the names of the individuals mentioned in the email have also been tailored to match the name of the recipient, which may be used to catch the recipient off-guard. Even though this email was targeting one of our Welsh-based clients, our advanced monitoring systems were able to identify this scam. Â
419 scams continue to grow in popularity as ways for cybercriminals to make quick money. Luckily, our advanced monitoring systems were able to detect and identify all four of these scams before the recipients became victims.Â

During the past three or four decades, Canadian policy makers at both the federal and wireless solutions snap on case black samsung flight a796 provincial levels have tried just about every trick in the book to finance technology companies, particularly those that are at an early stage in their development.
In the early 1980s, we had the Scientific Research Tax Credits (SRTCs) that allowed technology companies that were not yet profitable to predict in advance what their R&D expenditures were going to be during a certain year and then effectively sell those expenditures to taxable corporations and individuals for use as tax write-offs. The troubles came about when the companies were asked to verify their expenditure to the tax authorities. Many CEOs and CFOs ended up in jail or spent years dealing with aggressive tax auditors.
The SRTC program was eventually replaced by the current Scientific Research and Experimental Development (SR&ED) program, in which the R&D must be done in advance and the tax credit comes directly from the government to the company. In the case of a company that is not profitable, the credit takes the form of a cash payment that is a percentage of the R&D expenditures – typically about 40 per cent in provinces where the provinces top up the federal payments.
If there is a deficiency in the SR&ED program, it is that it only applies to R&D and not to other vital activities such as marketing and selling. In the early 90s, both the federal and the provincial governments got into the business of subsidizing the venture capital industry in order to address this deficiency. They left the SR&ED program pretty much the same, but they encouraged the formation of a new breed of venture capital companies known as Labour Sponsored Venture Capital (LSVC) companies. Explaining the role of labour in the LSVCs is beyond the scope of this article (in fact it is beyond the scope of most articles on the subject), but they did offer tax credits of up to 35 per cent to any individual who wished to buy shares in them.
To say that the LSVC program was a success would be stretching the truth. It was poorly designed in the first place and the two levels of government have been redesigning it ever since. For example, the managers of one of the very wireless solutions snap on case black samsung flight a796 first LSVCs in Ontario decided they could make more money for their shareholders by investing in T-bills and it was virtually impossible to drag any money out of them for risky ventures like software start-ups. The government addressed that problem by introducing very stringent pacing rules that prevented an LSVC from sitting on its money. As the rules became more complex and more plentiful, the cost of running a LSVC escalated. Scarcely a week went by without some policy or analysis group in one of the two levels of government coming to the industry with a request for information on anything from job creation to the hiring policies of the investee companies. The brokers who sold the investment units insisted upon something they called trailer fees even though they barely understood the product and were unable to provide much post-sale support. The LSVCs carried the full load of communicating with the unit holders . And this brings us to another problem: The typical LSVC had too many unit holders, because each unit holder was effectively limited to a $5,000 investment as that was the level at which the tax credit went away. A single mailing to unit holders could cost in excess of $50,000.
Both levels of government seem to have given up on the LSVC program and are withdrawing their tax credits. Unfortunately, this is occurring at a time when the whole Canadian VC industry is imploding. The deal flow is only a fraction of what it was just five years ago, even though our government laboratories and universities are under great pressure to commercialize their technology and there is no shortage of entrepreneurs.
A replacement program well worth investigating is the flow-through share (FTS) program that has been used for years in the mining and resource industries. As its name implies, it allows the flow of losses from non-profitable corporations to corporations and individuals that have taxes wireless solutions snap on case black samsung flight a796 to pay. The federal government first introduced the FTS program in the mid-1950s, though the tax laws governing it have repeatedly changed since then. It has withstood the test of time. It does not send people to jail. It seems to achieve the same goals as the LSVC program has been striving for without all the confusion and bells and whistles. In his book, The Way Ahead: Meeting Canada’s Productivity Challenge, , RBC professor for the commercialization of innovation at the University of Ottawa’s , talks about the “social contract between science and society in the U.S.†that arose in the late 1940s and gave rise to that bookmark php unique ecosystem we know today as Silicon Valley.

As if the “right stuff†is somehow genetically encoded as result of being born on American soil.
But as Duke University adjunct professor observed in in the March 2009 issue of BusinessWeek, the success bookmark php of Silicon Valley in fact refutes this stereotype.
“Despite the fact that they constitute only 12 per cent of the American population, immigrants have started 52 per cent of Silicon Valley’s technology companies and contributed to more than 25 per cent of our global patents. AÂ multinational ecosystem that is bigger than any one country
What has been created in Silicon Valley is an ecosystem with the critical mass to attract the top people from around the world and provide them with the varied resources they need to build success. There are also cultural elements here that bear noting; namely, an appetite for risk and an acceptance that failure is a fundamental building block of business success. But again, one can argue these characteristics define the multinational culture of Silicon Valley itself, as opposed to the U.S. in general.

The tens of thousands of talented individuals who have been drawn to Silicon Valley represent a rich resource for startups from almost any country in search of the counsel, capital and resources they need to bring technology to market. In Canada’s case, there are 300,000 ex-pats living in the orbit of California’s technology sector.
“We must find out how to tap into all these Canadians and ask their help,†said , president and CEO of Waterloo’s .
Incubation from the grass roots: The C100
In March 2010, a number of Canadian ex-pats decided to make that task easier. They pooled their resources to create the C100.
C100 is a non-profit, member-driven organization dedicated to supporting Canadian technology entrepreneurship and investment, comprised of a select group of Canadians based primarily in the Valley, including executives of leading technology companies, experienced startup entrepreneurs and venture capital investors.
“We’re trying to give Canadians as much of an unfair advantage as we can,†said Lee. “We are trying to leverage the talent pool down here to provide that success path, to provide mentors, connections and access to funding.â€
Within its first five months, the C100 earned the support and sponsorship of government, economic development agencies and technology incubators across Canada, from and , to , and Communitech. Seventy Canadian companies were introduced in the Valley and five secured VC investment — a total of US$45 million. And that was just the start.
“We’re still small and still growing,†said Lee.
And this is important to a new or growing tech venture because…
is CEO of , a Waterloo startup that is among the scores of companies to date that have been introduced in the Valley by the C100. To him, the C100 is a “business mentoring program on steroids†that can help a startup “go beyond becoming a company to becoming a globally competitive company that can scale.â€
Achieving this global perspective it critical in two ways.
First, to bring technology to market, startup entrepreneurs must think globally in terms of which markets they should target. Second, they must also think globally in terms of how far afield they should look for the help and resources they need to reach those markets.
As the C100 demonstrates, there is an overwhelming array of resources out there for company incubation and growth. The only way for a startup to tap into this is to realize that the value chain for bringing technology to market transcends borders. Entrepreneurs must look beyond their own backyards and connect with as many people as possible.

6. Add-ons expand the versatility of the smartphone
The Motorola Atrix provides a model of what the future will look like with a docking port. While we can do alot with the smartphone it is difficult to review detailed charts, pdfs and the screen can be difficult to read at times. The idea of a docking port is not new but the first attempt by Motorola shows how it can be done and while the port is expensive today and may not include everything we need, I believe this will only get better and more affordable with time and innovation. In fact, I believe that docking ports will be manufactured separately and come with a standard docking connection for all smartphones. So regardless of the cellphone you select the docking port will essentially be a cost effective lightweight alternative to the business computer as we become more mobile professionals. Offices of the future will have docking ports for us to connect our smartphones and do work.
7. Transformation of the Workplace
The workplace is changing. Technology has allowed us to do more with less. Globalization, telecommuting and the ever mobile business professional are factors which change the way we work. The traditional cubicle or office will be less of the way we work tomorrow. Shared cubicles, work from home options will drive the smartphone to the centre of the workplace.
8. Cost savings!
The average smartphone costs about $500, while the average business PC or notebook will cost about $900, that’s close to $1500 to equip a professional. Imagine doing away with the PC and taking the smartphone on contract for $100 plus the purchase of a smartphone docking station for say $200 (this is based on an estimated future cost of a docking station), that’s $300 to equip a professional vs the $1500 price tag before.
9. Wireless toolkits and multiple device connectivity
With connectivity protocols like DNLA (Digital Living Network Alliance®) we will be able to connect multiple devices in a home or office. So your smarpthone can connect to your DNLA TV to view a video or to attached storage devices and digital media servers. These toolkits expand the power of a little cellphone and make it powerful enough to do multiple tasks via other devices and media.

10. Our work will change
The nature of our work will continue to be more centreed around email, collaboration, social media and this will be easier achieve via mobile computing. Collaborative tools are important in the work place and will continue to increasingly become more important because of the mobile nature of the business professional. These collaborative tools will be most effective through cell phones and mobile devices.
Those are my 10 reasons. Before I end I want to say one final word about tablets. I consider tablets to be a mobile device and not a PC product. I can see that the tablet will play an equally important role in the office along with our cell phones. Both devices will transform the way we work and how we work in the future, but I believe it is the smartphone that will drive this change while the tablet will support these changes in the future.

When the first iPad launched last year, Jobs described it as “magical”. So does that label apply to the iPad 2? It’s always a tough act to follow the wonderment of the first born child. In this case, iPad 2 has some incremental features and functionality that set it apart from the first version, including:
Rear facing HD camera, and front facing VGA camera
33 per cent thinner 8.8mm (13.4mm)
15 per cent lighter: 1.3 pounds (vs. 1.5 pounds)
Two colours – black and white
Up to 2x faster CPU and up to 9x faster graphics
Dual core processors
3-axis gyroscopes (aids in gesture-based actions, navigation and gaming)
Running iOS 4.3
These features will also help the iPad 2 remain competitive with the competition that will be in the market in 2011, and will have many features and functions that were missing in the first iPad. Samsung, Motorola, RIM, and others are not in the market yet, but have been announced and expected to launch in 2011.

Although bleeding edge adopters bought their iPad’s not even 1 year ago (iPad was first available in Canada end of May, 2010) some may still pass on their existing ‘old’ technology to kids – parents or friends and opt for the latest and greatest.  Other early adopters may put off purchasing a new iPad so soon, and wait for the iPad 3, for which rumors have already begun. Why? iPad 2 may not have enough of the “magic” for some existing iPad owners to upgrade just yet. Tablet Review:
There is room for competition for those vendors focused on niche markets. RIM is well positioned to win the hearts of business users in Canada who are already invested in BlackBerry devices, and trust the security inherent in RIM’s devices and brand name. Apple’s iPad2 does not support flash either, impacting the user experience while Web browsing, and opening the door for competitors. There were also some issues with iPads being returned recently due to the touch screens acting up. Customers may dismiss that as part of the bleeding edge experience and working out the bugs, or it could impact their next media tablet selection. As for the old inventory, it’s expected to come down in price to help clear shelves, while the new devices will maintain the same price structure as before.
iPad 2′s incremental features will help keep the momentum going and drive continued adoption and mindshare among early adopters and the mainstream alike… at least until Apple comes out with another magical surprise. Abracadabra!
