Top 10 benefits of iPhone 4 over iPhone 3GS

iphone-4-vs-iphone-3gs1"iPhone 4 is the biggest leap since the original iPhone," said Apple CEO, Steve Jobs, while unveiling the fourth-genration iPhone at WWDC. Apple's iPhone has achieved a phenomenal success world-wide, evolving into the most advanced  mobile phone in its successive generations. A year ago, Apple launched its iPhone 3GS model featuring a camera with higher resolution and video capability, voice control, and support for 7.2 Mbps HSDPA. The successor iPhone 4, turns the dream of video calling into reality. Apple’s innovative new Retina display and the highest resolution display ever built into a phone, ensures crisp text, images and video. Additionally, iPhone 4 features a 5 megapixel camera with LED flash, HD video recording and a 3-axis gyro and up to 40 percent longer talk time. All this comes in an scintillating all-new design of glass and stainless steel encasing the slimmest smartphone on this planet. The fourth-generation of iPhone comes with world’s most advanced mobile operating system - iOS 4,  which includes over 100 new features and 1500 new APIs for developers. Before you bet your money to go for superior iPhone 4, you need to have a look at the top advantages it offers over iPhone 3GS. We draw the top 10 iPhone 4 Vs iPhone 3GS comparision of features.

1. Display

iPhone 4 retains the size of 3GS with a 3.5 inch diagonal. It's completely different with 4 times as many pixels with the so-called retina display.  Not just that iPhone 4 flaunts a 4 times the pixels of earlier iPhones, you can feel the difference between the glass you touch and the pixels that are removed.

The 3GS offers a 480×320 pixel resolution at 163ppi. While the iPhone 4 receives a significant bump up providing 960 x 640-pixel resolution at 326ppi and an 800:1 contrast ratio. The screen isn't OLED as with some other smartphones. While the screen isn't OLED as with some other smartphones. Apple claims its IPS display technology is better.

2. Storage

The iPhone 4 is available at capacities of 16 GB and 32 GB. The iPhone 3GS has regressed with a new 8GB of memory model apart from the 16GB and 32 GB models. This looks a bid to woo the customers on budget looking for the defunct iPhone 3G.

3. Camera

iPhone 4's camera is a much-hyped issue, especially with the HD video recording facility.  But, it won't match the best camera phones. Still its excels the 3 megapixels iPhone 3GS with 5 megapixels camera and an added LED flash. What's more, you have a front-facing camera for FaceTime Wi-Fi video calls and more.

4. HD Video recording

With a Flip Mino HD like video quality iPhone 4 is a giant leap in terms of video recording. The 3GS also supported video recording but it was VGA. iPhone 4 received a 720P is a real bump up to a 5 megapixel camera with a nice addition although at this size any further megapixel increases do become a bit silly due to lens size.

5. Wireless and data

iPhone 4 goes a step ahead of 3GS to adds 802.11n along with 802.11b/g and Bluetooth 2.1. The 7.2Mbps HSDPA, 3G and EDGE specs continue to feature in the iPhone 4.

6. Sleek design

As Steve Jobs' claims, Apple iPhone 4 is the sleekest mobile on earth. Just 9.3mm in thickness, 24% thinner than the iPhone 3GS, the Jony Ive (iPhone 4).  iPhone 4 measures 0.37 inch deep whereas iPhone 3GS's thickness stands at 0.48 inch. Further, iPhone 4 is slightly narrower, 2.31 inches to 2.44 inches. The two models weigh the same 4.8 ounces, still the tweaks to the dimensions make the iPhone 3GS seem more sludgy in comparison to the newest iPhone.

7. 3 axis Gyro

The most advanced feature added to iPhone 4 is the 3-axis gyro that takes motion-sensing in mobiles to a new level. When paired with the accelerometer, iPhone 4 can perform advanced motion sensing such as user acceleration, angular velocity and rotation rate. With the inclusion of gyro, iPhone 4 will offer motion gestures and greater precision to elevate the gaming experience.

8. External buttons and inputs

Overall iPhone 4 inherits the same form factor and buttons, but it adds an extra mic button to offer better call quality through noise cancellation.  Evidently there has been no alterations in the button sizes or location, but the volume of button has been separated into up and down.

9. Power and battery

According to Apple CEO iPhone 4 offers a 40% improvements in its battery performance over the 3GS model. With a 7 hours talk time on 3G, iPhone 4 exceeds 5 hours on the 3GS. The standby time nears 300 hours, which is same for the 3GS.

Users can expect an hour more on browsing and 10 hours more audio playback with the video unchanged at 10 hours.

10. iOS 4 and multitasking

One of the greatest advantages with iPhone 4 is the iOS 4 operating system that supports multitasking, details of which you can read in our. The iOS 4 includes over 100 new features and 1500 new APIs for developers. What's more, iPhone 4 with iOS 4 will ensure that multitasking doesn't hamper the performance or battery life. Steve Jobs demonstrated that the services such as Pandora and navigation running in background while other apps were running in the foreground.

Those using Apple iPhone 3GS can go for an upgraded to iOS 4 as soon to be available on in iTunes 9.2 for Mac OS X and Windows in a while or June 21st. Alternately users can go for a iPhone 3GS 4.0 jailbreak.

Blackberry asy14396003 bold 9000 charging pod Car buyers chose function over flash in auto Web sites

Car buyers chose function over flash in auto Web sites

What makes a great auto maker Web site?

Flashy car pictures? Videos of speeding cars or SUVs truckin’ along mud covered rought roads? Hardly. According a recent survey conducted by J.D. Power and blackberry asy14396003 bold 9000 charging pod Associates Canada.

Nestor Arellano

The survey company found a definite link between online experience satisfcation and people heading to the auto showrooms for a test drive. However, in my story, Ryan Robinson, the company’s industry practice leader, reveals that a lot of car makers have their Web strategy all wrong.

“Of course buyers want to see beautiful Web sites. But the main reason the visit the sites is to get information that will help them make a purchasing decision,” he said. In other words: Flash is fine but we want functionality.

When asked to rank the site experience satisfaction on a scale of 100 to 1,000 respondents placed the following automakes blackberry asy14396003 bold 9000 charging pod in the top five position: Lexus (843); Mazada (825); Toyota (822); Suzuki (817) and Audi (80 .

The bottom five was made up of: Mitsubishi (777); GMC (775); Cadillac (766); Chrysler (760) and BMW (757).

Here’s what consumers are looking for in a good auto Web site:

Ease of navigation – Well laid out sites score high with consumers. Online users want to have easy access to features and information. People don’t like to blackberry asy14396003 bold 9000 charging pod drill down through layers of subject headings and pages.

A very popular site option is the “3-box layout”. It makes use of a permanent navigation bar at the top of the page that shows a few general sections that users can visit.

The middle section of the page could sport a “dynamic display.” This could be a rotating image of a car (probably the top of the line or most popular model). Parts of the machine could serve as navigational links or reveal outstanding features of the car when touched by a cursor.

“Data shown could relate to horse power, top speeds, or lease rates and rebates,” blackberry asy14396003 bold 9000 charging pod said Robinson.

The lower section of the page could include another row of permanent navigational buttons that provide a static link to less frequently searched sections.

Roll over menus revealing several navigational choices when simply touched by a cursor help reduce site clutter. This feature also cuts down the number of sections users need to click through.

Provide for browsing and comparison – The whole idea of using a Web site is to be able to browse and compare models without having to drive to the showroom and face the pressure from pushy salespeople.

Yet the J.D. Power survey revealed just 28 per cent of site visitors said they were unable to perform vehicle comparison on the Web sites. The survey also showed when vehicle comparison could not be made, overall Web satisfaction dropped to 759 from an average index score of 813 when comparison was possible.

Site visitors also wanted to be able to equip a vehicle online and then get a price quote on how much upgrades would add to the total cost of the vehicle.

Replace Flash with functionality –

Beautiful Web sites with sleek images and fancy videos may look great but consumers would rather have fast loading pages and useful applications.

Manufacturers need to strike a balance between Flash and functionality, according to the survey. Ultimately, buyers look for a site they can use, as opposed to one they can simply view.

Multi-tasking is the ticket – The site has to be relevant to the consumer. The survey shows online credit applications are no longer a novelty, but an expected option for online users.

Other options online customers want include:

- Scheduling a sales appointment (76 per cent);
- Completing a credit application (72 per cent);
- Requesting a price quote from dealer (66 per cent);
- Obtaining a brochure of a vehicle (58 per cent);
- Locating a vehicle at a dealership with an inventory locator tool (51 per cent);
- Access to local or independent dealer sites (38 per cent)
- Investigate discounts, sale offers or rebates (37 per cent)
- Use the search tool to help locate information (33 per cent)

Mobile Web access – Around 26 per cent of those aged 46 and below are looking for , according to Robinson.

“I think it will be increasingly important for manufacturers to develop sites specifically designed for the smaller smart phone screens,” he said.

As smart phones gain more features and functionality, he said, consumers will develop the habit of browsing for products on their handsets.

Motorola skn6252a miniusb to microusb adaptor 5 tips and 3 sites that take care of your digital legacy when you die

5 tips and motorola skn6252a miniusb to microusb adaptor 3 sites that take care of your digital legacy when you die

If I’m having this much problems managing my multiple digital presences now, try to imagine what could happen if for example I suddenly croaked.

Nestor Arellano

It’s a morbid thought, but have you motorola skn6252a miniusb to microusb adaptor ever wondered what happens to your LinkedIn account, your Facebook page, Twitter, Flickr or whatever account when you die?

In my article and its social media expert Adele McAlear, explains that the tangle of digital detritus we leave behind can have far reaching consequences on the lives of our loved ones, friends and even businesses we’re affiliated with.

“You’re Facebook page lives on long after you’re dead and unless arrangements are made other social sites won’t close your account either,” she said.

Conversely, if you haven’t left your account passwords to anyone it would be extremely difficult motorola skn6252a miniusb to microusb adaptor to open up those accounts.

Imagine if you had a Website that is earning money through ad placements, manuscript or book sales, online donations. Rather than help your family through financial difficulties those funds could be barred from them. Worst if someone else got hold of the password or hacked the system, they could siphon off the money.

What if you were blogging or talking to online communities to promote a company through a social site? If you die and no one in the organization has the motorola skn6252a miniusb to microusb adaptor password to the site, the company won’t be able to moderate discussion or filter out damaging posts.

Here’s where you need your porn buddy. You’ve got accounts to not so family friendly sites which if ever dug up could bring some embarrassing moments to your loved ones of business colleagues.

Here are a few things to consider when preparing for your digital demise:

1)     Determine what it is you want to pass on or get rid of

2)     Designate a key person who will be left with account passwords and instructions. This could be a digital executor working under your lawyer, a friend working with your family or a buddy known only to you.

3)     Consider money in and money out issues. These are sites that are earning you money or sites that you owe money.

4)     Explain to your family your wishes. What may be important for you might be hard to understand for them.

5)     Understand the death policies of your social media provider and make arrangements with them early on.

Here are some sites that can help you managed your affairs. They have free and paid services:

Twitter to use own Web link shrinker this summer

SAN FRANCISCO — Twitter plans to start using bookmark php its own Web link shortener on addresses that users include in tweets.

Starting this summer, Twitter will use its new "t.co" domain name to shorten links that users post directly on Twitter.com or through applications such as TweetDeck. That will help the posts stay within the service's 140-character limit. The company is currently testing its linking technology with some employee accounts.

Users won't always see their links displayed as "t.co" addresses, though. If you get Twitter updates sent to your phone via text messaging, a link might show up as a "t.co" address. But you might see the bookmark php full address or the Web page's title when looking at that same post on Twitter.com.

"Ultimately, we want to display links in a way that removes the obscurity of (a) shortened link and lets you know where a link will take you," Twitter spokesman Sean Garrett wrote on Twitter's blog Tuesday.

Garrett said that this method of packaging links is meant to improve user safety and will help Twitter gather data for its "promoted tweets," which are Twitter posts paid for by advertisers to appear in search results on the site.

He also noted that in March, Twitter started using its own "twt.tl" address to automatically channel links that users sent in messages directed specifically at another user. That was a way for Twitter to spot and cut down on the spread of malware and other unsavory content that links can lead to; Twitter can simply disable a "twt.tl" address if it led to a questionable site. bookmark php

Twitter used to automatically shrink links on tweets as well — first using TinyURL, later using bit.ly — but the site doesn't currently do so. So if you want to share a long link with friends, you'd have to go to TinyURL, bit.ly or another service to shorten the link first.

Even after Twitter implements "t.co," Garrett said that users will still be able to use link shorteners of their choosing. This means you should still be able to take advantage of traffic analysis and other features that come with those services. But those shortened links will be converted into a "t.co" address.

The effect of Twitter's move on existing link shorteners is likely to be small. After all, they are also commonly used in e-mails, Facebook posts and other settings.

The biggest problem with having Steve Jobs kick off the WWDC with the iPhone 4 announcement is that all bookmark php the developer news that also happened gets buried in the press that follows. We would gladly trade three "Steve Jobs Couldn't Get Wi-Fi To Work" articles for just one great new app announcement or dongle sweetness article.

Well, we haven't forgotten that other news happens, so join the Mac|Life stafff, won't you, for all the other stuff that happened this week that isn't just about the iPhone.

Features:

- - There's not a thing in the world quite like good quality free software. And if you're a writer, there are literally hundreds of choices. We've narrowed that down to three gotta haves for your Apple products for when you just have to get that idea out onto the screen.

- - bookmark php Of course, you're not going to get any writing done if you gets sucked into the gaming world on Facebook, but there are some pretty fun time killers nonetheless.

- - This regular feature can help you learn a thing or two that you might not have stumbled on yourself. Want to check your iPhone data usage? Want to find an app quickly? Keep reading.

- - See, now, there are things that happen that don't involve Apple products, like the World Cup. But since our readers are Apple junkies, there must be some way to bring futbol and iProducts together. Well we've got the best of the best all ready for you to shout GOOOOOOOOAAAALLLLLLLL!!!!!!

Reviews:

- - The Six-String Thing - Maybe sports isn't really your thing. Or maybe just not soccer. No, maybe you're more a rocking out kinda guy. If that's the case, app developers are taking advantage of bookmark php all that big screen goodness on the iPad to hook you up with plenty of six-string love.

- - While a lot of apps make use of the iPad's greater screen size to cram more stuff in, an often overlooked wonderful addition is how much more beauty you can see. Nokia hf 510 bluetooth car speakerphone NEW BRUNSWICK RELEASES 21ST CENTURY LEARNING PLAN

NEW BRUNSWICK RELEASES 21ST CENTURY LEARNING PLAN

On May 14th the Anglophone sector of the New Brunswick Department of Education nokia hf 510 bluetooth car speakerphone released its proposal on how to shift our public education system to a 21 st Century learning model. The plan was developed using a co-leadership model with principals and district leaders, and the consultation document will now be used to engage our teachers.

John Kershaw

As New Brunswick teachers were each allocated a notebook computer, for the first time in history we were able to forward a copy of a draft learning strategy to every teacher, for their advice and counsel.

The plan, entitled 21st Century Learning (NB3-21C) is available for review at our departmental website:.

While the three year plan nokia hf 510 bluetooth car speakerphone is quite comprehensive, four key elements are emerging as critical pillars to success. Let’s call them the CRT2 formula, where C is Creativity, R is Relevance; the first T is Time and the second, Technology.

Creativity

Public education in the industrial era was founded on discipline and facts. In the 21st Century individual and societal success will be founded on creativity. Creative thinkers will be in demand to guide business innovation and to solve complex societal issues, some of global proportions.  NB3-21C is designed to produce creative problem solvers. Today, nokia hf 510 bluetooth car speakerphone creativity trumps regurgitation of facts. Facts you can access on the internet.

Relevance

The OECD, EU, Partnership for 21st Century Skills in the United States, and many authors are calling for significant changes to what students learn and how teachers teach.  NB3-21C calls for a complete assessment of our Essential Graduation Requirements, curricula outcomes and instructional practices to determine which ones are truly nokia hf 510 bluetooth car speakerphone relevant to the 21st Century learner.

Time

Last year, 50% percent of the students at a local high school missed 50% of their classes in December. When asked to explain why, they stated that school was a waste of their time.

The response is an alarm bell from two perspectives. First, the students found school irrelevant to their needs (see above). Secondly, students value their time.

Society invests millions of dollars every year in educating our youth, so of course we value their time. But do we give serious consideration to and value every minute they are giving us? There is urgency here. We need to position each and every child to reach their full potential, within a set time allotment.

New Brunswick’s school calendar equates to roughly 170,000 minutes of instruction between kindergarten to grade 12. We have students at school for only 170,000 minutes! Throw in a few snow days and instruction time decreases accordingly. For NB3-21C to be successful, we will be examining our school calendar, instruction time allocations, lessons, activities, instruction, and learning environment in an effort to make every instruction minute engaging to and relevant for our students.

And at the same time, we know we need to strike the right balance between a student’s instruction time, and our teachers having the time to plan for instruction. Seeking the advice of our teachers on this issue will be critical to finding solutions.

Technology

The 21st Century Age of Knowledge is rooted in rapid advancements in information and communications technology. ICT facilitates access to information for every student via the internet. We intend to create ICT rich learning environments because students deserve to have access to the tools of their generation in the classroom.

NB3-21C’s focus is on producing creative problem solvers, being relevant to our students and using their time wisely. This will include creating ICT rich learning environments, where each student can access information at his or her own speed of learning.

Walmart

As Apple is preparing to meet a large demand lg mobile f8m083 06 lg data cable bulk packaging for iPhone 4, Walmart can now be added to the list of distributors on the launch day of June 24, according to .

The reason for the move is an attempt to help Apple alleviate some of the stresses of good 'ol supply and demand, giving customers an opportunity to purchase the handset from multiple retail stores.  Best Buy and Radio Shack are also ramping up to offer up the newest iPhone on June 24 as well.

This would be the first time that Walmart will be selling the iPhone on a launch day of the device.  Before, only previous versions of the iPhone were made available by the company, much later on.  We all remember the of huge lines outside of AT&T and Apple Stores.

It should be noted though that Walmart will not be participating in pre-orders of the device, which are slated to start this coming Tuesday, through Apple as well as AT&T.

SAN bookmark php JOSE, Calif. — Revenue at the world's semiconductor companies will climb 28.4 percent to $290.5 billion this year, an industry trade group projected Thursday.

That growth will taper off to an increase of 6.3 percent in 2011 and 2.9 percent in 2012, the Semiconductor Industry Association said.

Chip sales have been rising steadily for months after the recession sapped demand and forced companies that buy semiconductors to slash their inventories.

SIA reported a 58 percent jump in bookmark php chip sales for the first quarter of 2010 compared with the year-earlier quarter, and a 50.4 percent rise in April.

The recovery comes after a 9 percent drop in chip revenue last year to $226.3 billion.

"Healthy demand in all major product sectors and in all geographic markets drove sales of semiconductors to record levels in the first four months of 2010," SIA President George Scalise said in a statement Thursday.

He said SIA's forecast for bookmark php the year is based on projected worldwide economic growth of 4.6 percent this year and 4.4 percent in 2011.

Emerging economies such as China and India will help lead the way as demand for information technology in those markets helps boost demand for chips, Scalise said.

EU’s Internet chief warns states against choosing proprietary software as standards

EU warns against proprietary software

BRUSSELS — The European Union's top Internet official took aim at Microsoft Corp. on Thursday, warning that governments can accidentally lock themselves into one company's software for decades by setting it as a standard for their technology systems.

EU Internet Commissioner Neelie Kroes, in her previous post as EU antitrust chief, fined Microsoft hundreds of millions of euros (dollars) in a lengthy row over the company's refusal to share some data with rivals and the tying of a Web browser to a best-selling operating system.

She now says she wants to draw up detailed guidelines for European governments to encourage them to require other software, especially programs based on open source code that is freely shared between developers.

The final programs are sometimes — but not always — given away to users. IBM and Oracle, for example, charge customers for some software they make that is based on open source code.

Kroes is aiming to influence government tender specifications which can demand all suppliers to the state to stick to a certain type of technology. This can have a massive impact by favoring one company's software over others.

She cited tax departments requiring the use of a specific Web browser to file online tax returns.

"Many authorities have found themselves unintentionally locked into proprietary technology for decades and after a certain point that original choice becomes so ingrained that alternatives risk being systematically ignored," she said.

"That's a waste of public money that most public bodies can no longer afford," she told a conference organized by Open Forum Europe, a group of technology companies that want to promote software based on open source code.

She openly favored open software saying users could choose between "the one that you can download from the Website and that you can implement without restrictions or the other one which you have to buy which is restricted to certain fields and which requires royalty payments for embedded intellectual property rights — and the answer is obvious."

Governments should have a "clear justification" if they mandate proprietary software that sets royalties and restrictions, she said.

Google Inc. has tried to rival Microsoft's office programs by providing similar software for free — something it can afford to do because it develops most of its revenue from selling advertising linked to widely used search engine. Microsoft relies mostly on selling the software it develops.

Bookmark php Free App Fridays: Writing

Writers: we're a tortured bunch. And with our Macs and our iPhones and iPads in hand, we can do a lot of damage. Heck, there's a whole bunch of great writing apps out there designed bookmark php specifically to help fuel our creative fires. They say that writing may be a dead trade, but these free apps definitely prove that writing is still alive--especially in our hearts.

All cheesiness aside, here are three great, totally free apps that'll help stimulate your mind, inspire your creative, and help you stay focused on that Sci-Fi novel you're writing in your basement. Remember, every writer needs a toolbox, and we just have ours stocked with Apple products.

Mac

To stick with the theme, we’re writing this column in our Bean word processing application. For writers, the hardest part about the job is sitting down in our seats and pumping out sentences. Sometimes, the inspiration just isn’t there, or our minds are off wandering about the most inane things. We found that the best practice for churning out written content is writing on an empty word processor--kind of like what writing with a type writer used to be like. Microsoft Word’s busy toolbar (and soon to be even busier with the next Office update, which contains the infamous “ribbon”) can be very distracting when you’re trying to write out your next novel--or your dissertation. Bean is most definitely a veritable solution, as it is a very simple word processing application free of distractions, with just  the right amount of options you need to put together a paper.

iPad

If you’re managed to master typing on the iPad (and have somehow, miraculously, designated the device for bookmark php taking notes in your college-level engineering course), Sundry is a wonderful note taking application that comes chockfull with a variety of features, like an equation solver, the inclusion of a library of commonly used math symbols, voice recording and a whiteboard. This is the perfect app to have on your iPad if it serves a utilitarian purpose in your life.

iPhone

We all know that it’s kind of impossible to write down ideas while we’re driving. Sure, voice record is great, but transcribing your voice afterward can be a painful and grueling process--we still feel a little funky about hearing our interview voice played back to us. Dragon Dictation takes your spoken word and converts it into text, so you can easily dictate ideas to your iPhone or iPod touch, even if you just can’t find the time to sit down and write your ideas.

Dell lowers 1Q profit to build $100M legal reserve

ROUND ROCK, Texas — Dell Inc. said Thursday that it lowered its first-quarter results by $100 million, or 5 cents per share, to set aside a $100 million reserve it may need to pay out as part of a settlement related to an ongoing SEC accounting probe into the computer maker's accounting and financial reporting practices.

The company also said its CEO, Michael Dell, is talking with the Securities and Exchange Commission about a possible settlement.

Dell first disclosed an internal investigation into its accounting in 2006, saying it was notified in August of that year of an SEC inquiry related to its revenue recognition and financial reporting.

In 2007, it said it would restate more than four years of financial results with lower earnings after the probe found that its employees had misled auditors and manipulated results to meet performance targets.

Dell said Thursday that a settlement would include negligence-based fraud charges and non-fraud based charges connected to disclosures and alleged omissions that occurred before fiscal 2008 as part of its relationship with chip maker Intel Corp.

Dell said in a statement that its CEO and the SEC have begun talking about a "settlement framework" to resolve the allegations against it.

In the statement, Dell said that a settlement would not prevent Dell from working as an officer or director of a public company, and "would be made without admitting or denying the SEC's allegations."

In May, the company had reported a profit of $441 million, or 22 cents per share, for the Feburary-through-April quarter. The company says its profit for that period is now $341 million, or 17 cents per share. Its adjusted earnings remain the same at 30 cents per share.

Dell's shares dropped 30 cents, or 2.3 percent, to $12.77 in after-hours trading following its news release. It ended the regular session up 29 cents at $13.07.

US says nuclear sanctions are toughest ever; Iran’s leader dismisses them as ‘annoying flies’

Iran dismisses sanctions, but tried to avoid them

UNITED NATIONS — The U.S. and its allies scored a long-sought victory Wednesday by pushing through new U.N. sanctions over Iran's nuclear program, punishments Tehran dismissed as "annoying flies, like a used tissue."

The sanctions target Iran's powerful Revolutionary Guard, ballistic missiles and nuclear-related investments. Oil exports, the lifeblood of Iran's economy, are not affected because targeting them would have cost the U.S. essential support from Russia and China.

President Barack Obama said the sanctions are the toughest Iran has ever faced. They required several months of difficult negotiations by the five veto-wielding permanent U.N. Security Council members — the U.S., Russia, China, Britain and France — and non-member Germany. This is the fourth round of sanctions aimed at getting Iran into serious discussions on its nuclear ambitions.

"Actions do have consequences, and today the Iranian government will face some of those consequences," Obama said. He left the door open to diplomacy but said Iran "will find itself more isolated, less prosperous and less secure" unless it meets its obligations under the Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty.

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, on an official visit in Tajikistan, dismissed the new resolution.

"From right and from left, they adopt sanctions, but for us they are annoying flies, like a used tissue," he said.

Tehran insists its program is peaceful and aimed at producing nuclear energy. The U.S. and its allies say Iran is trying to produce nuclear weapons; they want Iran to suspend uranium enrichment and start negotiations aimed at ensuring that it uses nuclear technology only for peaceful purposes.

The new resolution bans Iran from pursuing "any activity related to ballistic missiles capable of delivering nuclear weapons," bars Iranian investment in activities such as uranium mining and prohibits Iran from buying several categories of heavy weapons including attack helicopters and missiles. Iran, however, already has most of what it would need to make a weapon.

Iran's top nuclear negotiator, Saeed Jalili, warned that "choosing the option of confrontation will bring Iran's resolute response," according to Iran's official news agency. He did not elaborate.

Iran's U.N. Ambassador Mohammad Khazaee accused the United States, Britain and their allies of abusing the Security Council to attack Iran.

"No amount of pressure and mischief will be able to break our nation's determination to pursue and defend its legal and inalienable rights," Khazaee said. "Iran is one of the most powerful and stable countries in the region and never bowed — and will never bow — to the hostile actions and pressures by these few powers and will continue to defend its rights."

U.S. Ambassador Susan Rice dismissed Khazaee's statement as "ridiculous … reprehensible, offensive, and inaccurate" and declared that "these sanctions are as tough as they are smart and precise."

The resolution was approved by a vote of 12-2 with Lebanon abstaining and Brazil and Turkey voting "no." Turkey and Brazil, both non-permanent council members, brokered a fuel-swap agreement with Iran that they offered as an alternative solution to concerns Tehran may be enriching uranium for nuclear weapons.

Lebanon's U.N. Ambassador Nawaf Salam said he abstained because the government failed to "reach a final position." A U.N. diplomat, speaking on condition of anonymity because the government debate was private, said the Cabinet was split, 14-14, on whether to vote no or abstain.

The sanctions put Iran in the unusual position of bashing key allies China and Russia. Both countries voted for the resolution and either could have vetoed it. Ahmadinejad warned Russian leaders last month "to correct themselves, and not let the Iranian nation consider them among its enemies."

In Moscow, the Itar-Tass news agency reported that Ahmadinejad will not take part in the summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization in Uzbekistan beginning Thursday. The group was created in 2001 to address religious extremism and border security in Central Asia, and has grown into a bloc aimed at defying U.S. interests in the region.

Ahmadinejad is scheduled to tour the World Expo in Shanghai this week, but is not expected to hold talks with senior Chinese leaders.

Iran holds more leverage over China, which needs Iran's oil and gas to feed its growing energy appetite, than it does over Russia, which has long provided important technology to Iran including building the country's first nuclear reactor. The facility is expected to begin electricity production this summer.

The Security Council imposed limited sanctions in December 2006 and has been ratcheting them up in hopes of pressuring Iran to suspend enrichment and start negotiations on its nuclear program. Iran has repeatedly defied the demand and has stepped up its activities, enriching uranium to 20 percent and announcing plans to build new nuclear facilities.

The new resolution imposes sanctions on 40 Iranian companies and organizations — 15 linked to Iran's Revolutionary Guard, 22 involved in nuclear or ballistic missile activities and three linked to the Islamic Republic of Iran Shipping Lines. That more than doubles the 35 entities that had been subject to an asset freeze.

The sanctions add one individual to the previous list of 40 Iranians subject to an asset freeze — Javad Rahiqi, who heads the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran's Esfahan Nuclear Technology Center. All 41 individuals will also now be subject to a travel ban.

Rahiqi declined to comment when contacted by The Associated Press.

The resolution also calls on all countries to cooperate in cargo inspections — which must receive the consent of the ship's flag state — if there are "reasonable grounds" to believe the cargo could contribute to the Iranian nuclear program.

On the financial side, it calls on — but does not require — countries to block financial transactions, including insurance and reinsurance, and to ban the licensing of Iranian banks if they have information that provides "reasonable grounds" to believe these activities could contribute to Iranian nuclear activities.

U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates said Tuesday that new sanctions would pave the way for tougher additional measures by the U.S. and its allies. France's U.N. Ambassador Gerard Araud said after Wednesday's vote that European Union foreign ministers will be meeting on Monday and France would like "a tough translation of the resolution," but it's up to the 27 countries to decide on additional sanctions.

Israel's ambassador to the United States, Michael Oren, said the resolution "can serve as a viable platform" for nations to launch sanctions such as restrictions on Iran's ability to import gasoline. "They have a lot of oil, but not a lot of refined oil or the ability to export oil abroad," he said.

The U.N. resolution was approved despite an Iranian diplomatic offensive launched in April. Jalili visited Beijing that month in the wake of U.S. reports saying China had dropped its opposition to possible new U.N. measures against Iran.

Iran also approached several non-permanent Security Council members, including Bosnia, Brazil, Turkey and Uganda, in hopes of averting new sanctions. Inviting diplomats from all 15 members of the Security Council to a two-hour dinner in New York in May was seen as Iran's high-profile attempt to head off additional penalties.

China's U.N. Ambassador Li Baodong said after the vote that the sanctions were aimed at curbing nonproliferation and would not affect "the normal life of the Iranian people" nor deter normal trade activity, a view echoed by Russia's U.N. envoy Vitaly Churkin.

The five permanent council members and Germany, in a statement after the vote, reaffirmed their "determination and commitment to seek an early negotiated solution to the Iranian nuclear issue … which would restore international confidence in the peaceful nature of Iran's nuclear program." It welcomed and commended "all diplomatic efforts in this regard, especially those recently made by Brazil and Turkey."

Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva said the new sanctions were "a mistake" implemented "just for spite." According to the state-run Agencia Brasil news agency, Silva said the resolution's supporters "threw out an historic opportunity to peacefully negotiate the Iranian nuclear program" — the fuel-swap agreement his country and Turkey had championed.

Under the proposal, Iran would swap some of its enriched uranium for fuel for a research reactor in Tehran. The U.S., Russia and France have said that — unlike the original plan drawn up eight months ago — the proposal would leave Iran with enough material to make a nuclear weapon.

The three countries sent a letter to the International Atomic Energy Agency seeking clarifications from Tehran, and several council ambassadors said they would still like to see the swap go ahead. Lebanon's Salam called it "a gateway for confidence building measures."

"We believe that the sanctions resolution is a painful failure of diplomatic efforts," Salam said. "We refuse to give up. We call on all states … to reinitiate and intensify diplomatic efforts."

The new sanctions should bring little direct political fallout for Ahmadinejad. The country has been deeply polarized since last June's disputed presidential election — which the opposition claims was rigged by vote fraud — and Ahmadinejad's backers are likely to use the sanctions as a rallying cry.

In Venezuela, President Hugo Chavez condemned the measures against Iran, his close ally.

"Why won't they sanction Israel? You realize the cynicism of the Yankee empire and its allies in the world," Chavez said in a televised speech Wednesday night. "Israel massacres, kills, doesn't comply with United Nations resolutions … and the United Nations acts as if nothing had happened."

Associated Press Writers George Jahn in Vienna, Matthew Lee in Quito, Ecuador, Peter James Spielmann at the United Nations, Beth Fouhy in New York City, Mark Lavie in Jerusalem and Olga Tutubalina in Dushanbe, Tajikistan contributed to this report.

Apple's Magic Trackpad Revealed?

Engadget's Joshua Topolsky reports:

Of all the surprises we expected to hear about in the WWDC keynote, a multitouch trackpad peripheral didn't exactly pop into our brains. But - whoomp - here it is. What we appear to be looking at is a brand new input device that Apple has dreamed up which connects to desktops (and laptops, if you like) via Bluetooth, much like the Apple Keyboard......

Moving to Mac: The Trackpad

Web Worker Daily's Scott Blitstein says:

One of my biggest concerns with my move to Mac was adjusting to a touchpad interface. I've used IBM ThinkPads for years and have grown accustomed to the TrackPoint. TrackPoints are getting scarce, though, and the Trackpad on the MacBook is a highly lauded feature. My friend Christelle even went so far as to call it life-changing. With praise like that, my expectations were high. How well does it stack up?....

Mac Or Windows: Making The Switch To MacBook

Embedded.com's Jack Ganssle says:

I've been lured by Steve Jobs siren song, at least for the laptop.

I have only been to an Apple store on two occasions, both recently, both after the iPad came to market. Each of those trips was both awful and fascinating.... I am still unsure how one actually goes about purchasing something....

....I like the idea of having native access to Unix, rather than a DOS command line shell, and the battle with Vista on my desktop left me unwilling to iterate that experience....

The MacBook is absurdly-priced... but it comes out of hibernation instantly... is very fast, and has seamless WiFi. The touchpad supports one, two, three, and even four-finger manipulation which is confusing at first, but greatly speeds navigation.

The machine, both physically and graphically, is simply beautiful, something that once would mean nothing to me. But my wife is an artist and she has instilled some level of appreciation for beauty in me....

Larry Magid: Steve Jobs Is A National Treasure

Mercury News's Larry Magid says:

I don't always agree with Steve Jobs, especially with the level of control Apple exerts over iPhone and iPad developers. But that doesn't change the fact that the man is a national treasure. When the history of the 20th and 21st centuries is written in stone, I have no doubt that Jobs will take his place along with Albert Einstein and Henry Ford.

Why I Fired Steve Jobs

The Daily Beast's Thomas E. Weber says:

As Apple's CEO introduces his new iPhone today, and its market cap passes Microsoft's, the man who infamously fired him, John Sculley, tells The Daily Beast's Thomas E. Weber about his regrets, their rift and how their partnership could have worked: Jobs should have been CEO, and Sculley's boss, rather than the other way around. Plus, other 1985 board members on Jobs then and now, and where they are today.

Macintosh Portable Recalled

businessmirror.com's Presy Alba says:

In 1989 Apple's first attempt at making a laptop the Macintosh Portable was met with raves from critics but poor sales from the consumers because of the price issue. To be fair, it was very expensive because Apple spared no expense in the construction: it had all the bells and whistles of a desktop Macintosh and it was portable.

It featured cutting-edge design elements that virtually determined how laptops are designed today....

Why I Don't Like The Mac And Loved The Nissan GT-R

TG Daily's Rob Enderle says:

I can like and respect Apple but I've never personally been attracted to Apple products.

The closest was Apple's second generation iMac which I still think is one of the coolest PC designs of all time (though I wanted it in black). However I've often had a hard time articulating why I don't like Apple products. They are attractive, they are easy to use, they are expensive but I tend to buy expensive things, and people stand in lines to buy many of them.

Earlier this week I went on an Exotic Car Excursion where I got to drive a Ferrari, a Lamborghini, a Porsche, a Lotus, an Austin Martian, and a Nissan GT-R. This experience was put on by the San Jose outlet of an outfit that rents exotic cars to drive called Club Sportiva.....

I m going to give you my impressions of each car, which car was most like an Apple product (to me), and why I wouldn't buy one.
