Free App Fridays: Writing
Writers: we're a tortured bunch. And with our Macs and our iPhones and iPads in hand, we can do a lot of damage. Heck, there's a whole bunch of great writing apps out there designed specifically to help fuel our creative fires. They say that writing may be a dead trade, but these free apps definitely prove that writing is still alive--especially in our hearts.
All cheesiness aside, here are three great, totally free apps that'll help stimulate your mind, inspire your creative, and help you stay focused on that Sci-Fi novel you're writing in your basement. Remember, every writer needs a toolbox, and we just have ours stocked with Apple products.
Mac
Bean

To stick with the theme, we’re writing this column in our Bean word processing application. For writers, the hardest part about the job is sitting down in our seats and pumping out sentences. Sometimes, the inspiration just isn’t there, or our minds are off wandering about the most inane things. We found that the best practice for churning out written content is writing on an empty word processor--kind of like what writing with a type writer used to be like. Microsoft Word’s busy toolbar (and soon to be even busier with the next Office update, which contains the infamous “ribbonâ€) can be very distracting when you’re trying to write out your next novel--or your dissertation. BlackBerry ASY14396010 9630 Charging Pod. Bean is most definitely a veritable solution, as it is a very simple word processing application free of distractions, with just the right amount of options you need to put together a paper.
iPad
Sundry

If you’re managed to master typing on the iPad (and have somehow, miraculously, designated the device for taking notes in your college-level engineering course), Sundry is a wonderful note taking application that comes chockfull with a variety of features, like an equation solver, the inclusion of a library of commonly used math symbols, voice recording and a whiteboard. This is the perfect app to have on your iPad if it serves a utilitarian purpose in your life.

iPhone
Dragon Dictation

We all know that it’s kind of impossible to write down ideas while we’re driving. Sure, voice record is great, but transcribing your voice afterward can be a painful and grueling process--we still feel a little funky about hearing our interview voice played back to us. Dragon Dictation takes your spoken word and converts it into text, so you can easily dictate ideas to your iPhone or iPod touch, even if you just can’t find the time to sit down and write your ideas.

Extra Time: World Cup coverage expands greatly on the Web and mobile phones
World Cup coverage expands on the Web, cell phones
NEW YORK — With games airing live on cell phones and computers, the World Cup will get more online coverage than any major sporting event yet. Watching highlights the next day on TV or YouTube will suddenly seem a downright ancient way to keep up with the action.
When the soccer tournament begins Friday, footy fans can follow the action from an array of mobile and Web applications and share in triumph and heartbreak across social media.
Walt Disney Co. networks ESPN and ABC, which are broadcasting the games in the U.S., will stream 54 games live on the newly launched ESPN3.com, formerly ESPN360. The games are free to those in the U.S. who get their Internet from a service provider affiliated with ESPN, including AT&T, Verizon, Comcast and many others. Nokia BL 4B Battery. The 10 games that will air live on ABC won't be available on ESPN3.com, but all 64 matches in the Cup will be available live on mobile devices to customers whose plans include TV on their phones.
Univision Communications has the Spanish-language broadcasting rights in the U.S., and it, too, will have games available on Univision.com and Univision Movil.
The digital coverage will be an especially important component for the World Cup because U.S. audiences will be watching many of the games - all being played in South Africa - during the day, possibly on their computers at work.
Comparing the digital experiences of the 2010 World Cup to the 2006 World Cup, Josh Kosner, senior vice president and general manager of ESPN Digital Media, said, "Things have changed utterly."
"This is going to be the biggest and most powerful demonstration of this, and it's just the start," Kosner said. "It's the play book, it's the blueprint for what's coming."
NBC's online coverage of the last Winter Olympics - also an international, daytime event - was extensive, drawing 45 million video streams. Traffic to NBCOlympics.com more than tripled from the 2006 Winter Games, with 45.7 million total visits compared to 13.3 million in 2006. That happened even though NBC held a lot of the footage for its prime-time broadcasts. ESPN expects worldwide online traffic for the World Cup to double or triple that of 2006.
The World Cup, a mixture of global and niche audiences - where some games mean much more to citizens of Honduras, for example - is particularly suited to the Internet. ESPN3.com, for example, will have the option to watch some games in either Portuguese, Arabic, German, Japanese or Korean.
The actual games are only part of the experience. Many media outlets have launched mobile applications, most of which feature live scores, news updates and some integration with Facebook or Twitter. Among them are apps from Fox Soccer Channel, The Associated Press, Goal.com, Mundial and many others.
ESPN has several, including an ESPN Radio app that gives live play-by-play audio. Turner Sports' SportsNow app promises direct linking to Facebook and Twitter to facilitate "trash-talk directly from the app."
Online interest in the World Cup has been building. The elaborate Nike World Cup commercial directed by Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu has been watched by more than 13 million on YouTube since debuting on May 17.
For the past year, Akamai Technologies Inc., which delivers about 20 percent of the world's Internet traffic, has been building its capability in anticipation of the World Cup. It expects traffic to be two or three times as heavy as what was measured during President Barack Obama's inauguration - thus far, the high point for traffic volume at about 1 terabit, or 1 trillion bits of data, per second. (Higher-quality video is also a major factor in boosting volume.)
"It could well be another watershed event in terms of people understanding what is now possible to do with video online," Akamai Chief Scientist Tom Leighton said. "This will draw a lot of people at once and that will cause people to be aware en masse that, hey, you can do some very cool things with video online that you can't even do with broadcast right now."
The World Cup is also shaping up to be a benchmark in the evolution of mobile TV, which is common in South Korea, growing in the rest of Asia, Africa and South America, but nascent in the U.S. and Europe. ESPN has partnered with AT&T, Sprint, Verizon, FLO TV and MobiTV to bring games to cell phones.
Any surge in bandwidth for live video could test those networks, which are already clogged. Just last week, AT&T announced that to ease congestion on its network, it would no longer offer unlimited Internet data plans for new smart-phone customers.
ESPN's Kosner acknowledged that those with live TV on their mobile phones are still a "relatively small audience," but predicted that the World Cup will be "a galvanizing event" for the capability.
Of course, technology is also being used for more quirky ends.
If you hurry, you can catch the final ticks to the World Cup Countdown app, which has simply been counting down to kickoff in South Africa since last year.
The Drinksin Footy Pubs 2010 app lets U.K. fans know the nearest pubs carrying the games. LiveSoccerTV.com, similarly, offers "soccer friendly" bars in the U.S.
Technology truly meets soccer enthusiasm in South Korea, where a World Cup iPhone app from KT Corp. includes a "glow stick mode" that lights up the screen with fluorescent colors when the phone is shaken - perfect for exuberant waving in South Africa or anywhere near a screen playing the games.
That still leaves one, essential question: Where's Becks?
Fear not. David Beckham, the dashing British wingman, has signed on with Yahoo Inc. as its "global football ambassador." Along with its extensive Cup coverage (which includes a toolbar just for updates and scores), Yahoo will offer a Beckham channel to share the midfielder's thoughts on the Cup.
Associated Press Writer Sangwon Yoon in Seoul, South Korea, contributed to this report.

Biker embarks on social media-driven trek across Canada
Biker embarks on social media-driven trek across Canada
Thanks to Olivier Kerebel, I’ll never think of the French as pinky-pointed tea-sipping, croissant-nibbling wimps again. Instead, I’ll think of Olivier’s epic thigh-busting bike ride across Canada that he’s recently launch from Toronto’s Dundas Square. I’ll also think of his savvy use of social media to bring his friends along for the journey.
I met Olivier when he was crashing on a friend’s couch (set up via couchsurfing.org). The Parisian is in Canada for a year on a temporary visa, and hopes to eventually end his bike ride in Vancouver. His last blog update - befreetochange.wordpress.com/- places him in Sudbury, Ont. and he’s posted the mandatory photos of the Big Nickel.
Follow Olivier's bike journey across the country with social media.
Olivier is using an array of Web 2.0 tools to document his trip and share it with peers. He has a knack for shooting video while riding that isn’t too shaky, and even narrating a monologue while pedaling – which he somehow manages to upload to YouTube. There’s lots of pictures on his WordPress blog, and Olivier is also updating a Facebook page and Twitter account.
But my favourite social media feature of this biking journey is Olivier’s use of Polldaddy.com. A simple radio-button poll sits on the right side of his blog, and after June 6 Olivier’s followers will click away to decide which route he will take across the country. It reminds me of the “Choose Your Own Adventure” book series I was fond of in elementary school. The ability to help determine Olivier’s fate and how he experiences Canada during his trek adds real appeal to reading the blog.. Samsung AB423643CE U600 Battery Bulk Packaging
Currently, the poll asks followers how cruel or how nice they plan to be to Olivier in their voting. Right now, it looks like Olivier’s in for a tough ride as 88 per cent of respondents indicate they’ll favour more difficult paths (including me – I’m hoping for a Grizzly encounter).
Olivier is also raising money for Save the Children through his blog, and anyone can make a donation online with a credit card. His goal is a humble $1500, but I’m guessing he’ll meet enough people along the way and gain enough interest with this blog that he’ll surpass that mark before he hits the Prairies.

Nokia’s mobile strategy and measurement challenges
Nokia’s mobile strategy and measurement challenges
We live in an increasingly mobile world and the decision to extend brand communication to the mobile channel seems inevitable. Â On the other hand, making this decision in a way that will pay off in the long-run is a less apparent process.
Mobile data measurement brings with it challenges that are very different from fixed web measurement. For example carrier restrictions, platform variations and mobile browser limitations are such that mobile product applications don’t easily lend themselves to uniform measurement across devices. In order to be able to use data as a strategic asset, measurement standards must be such that they can be applied to a wide range if devices.
Taia Postalati
Interactive Ontario recently hosted an AMA webinar featured Greg Dowling, Vice President of Mobile Strategy & Measurement at Semphonic and former Head of Analysis for Nokia. Dowling was leading Nokia’s recent initiative to implement first worldwide mobile analytics measurement standard, and his insights can be applied to mobile marketing.
Looking at mobile phone penetration by manufacturers, Nokia leads the way with over a third of the worldwide handset market. In the smartphone category, Nokia’s Symbian operating system makes up just over half of the smartphones used globally, followed by RIM at 20 per cent and iPhone at 15 per cent. (Gartner)  However iPhone owners use their devices much more than the owners of any of its competitors do.
Nokia’s approach to mobile product extension for its clients begins by aligning brand objectives with mobile strategy.Â
Lack of a definitive mobile strategy is the biggest challenge to generating a positive return on investment in mobile products. Often times, the decision to create a mobile product is tactical rather than strategic. At this early stage in mobile marketing adoption, this may very well be a viable approach. However without relevant functionality and broad handset reach, a mobile product is simply a branding exercise designed to attract consumer’s attention instead of focusing on conversion.. Apple Iphone Flex Cable
Determining a brand’s mobile suitability means asking what it is about a brand that is compelling to a mobile audience. Moving an entire website to the mobile web or building an application is not always the best way to communicate with consumers.Â
In many cases a simple but well executed text messaging campaign is more fitting. For example, a brand that handles perishable inventory, like a restaurant, will likely have a customer base that is interested in being notified about promotions. Another company that has several locations in an urban centre, like a retailer, will likely have customers who want to be able to find a nearest location on their cell phone.
When you’re thinking about how to structure your mobile product offering you have to be mindful of the range of devices in the hands of your consumers and also have clearly articulated brand objectives.  If you want to get into mobile you should begin the strategy process now.

Google gives users the option of background images on its home page
Google spruces up home page with background images
MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. — If Google's famously sparse home page is too plain for you, the company is giving you some more options.
A bold color photo of sand dunes replaced the white background to Google's search box Thursday. You can replace the desert scene with an image of your own or others available from Google. Motorola H17 Motorola Bluetooth. Or you can stick with the classic format.
In a blog post last week, Google Inc. said the move is aimed at making the "search experience more relevant, useful and fun through personalization."
It also follows an artistic choice made by Microsoft Corp.'s search engine, Bing, which also uses images as a background to its search box.

NEW BRUNSWICK RELEASES 21ST CENTURY LEARNING PLAN
NEW BRUNSWICK RELEASES 21ST CENTURY LEARNING PLAN
On May 14th the Anglophone sector of the New Brunswick Department of Education released its proposal on how to shift our public education system to a 21st Century learning model. The plan was developed using a co-leadership model with principals and district leaders, and the consultation document will now be used to engage our teachers.
John Kershaw
As New Brunswick teachers were each allocated a notebook computer, for the first time in history we were able to forward a copy of a draft learning strategy to every teacher, for their advice and counsel.
The plan, entitled 21st Century Learning (NB3-21C) is available for review at our departmental website: http://www.gnb.ca/0000/index-e.asp.
While the three year plan is quite comprehensive, four key elements are emerging as critical pillars to success. Let’s call them the CRT2 formula, where C is Creativity, R is Relevance; the first T is Time and the second, Technology.
Creativity
Â
Public education in the industrial era was founded on discipline and facts. In the 21st Century individual and societal success will be founded on creativity. Creative thinkers will be in demand to guide business innovation and to solve complex societal issues, some of global proportions. Â NB3-21C is designed to produce creative problem solvers. Today, creativity trumps regurgitation of facts. Facts you can access on the internet.
Relevance
The OECD, EU, Partnership for 21st Century Skills in the United States, and many authors are calling for significant changes to what students learn and how teachers teach. NB3-21C calls for a complete assessment of our Essential Graduation Requirements, curricula outcomes and instructional practices to determine which ones are truly relevant to the 21st Century learner.Â
Â
Time
Last year, 50% percent of the students at a local high school missed 50% of their classes in December. When asked to explain why, they stated that school was a waste of their time. Â
The response is an alarm bell from two perspectives. First, the students found school irrelevant to their needs (see above). Secondly, students value their time.
Society invests millions of dollars every year in educating our youth, so of course we value their time. But do we give serious consideration to and value every minute they are giving us? There is urgency here. July 2010. We need to position each and every child to reach their full potential, within a set time allotment.
New Brunswick’s school calendar equates to roughly 170,000 minutes of instruction between kindergarten to grade 12. We have students at school for only 170,000 minutes! Throw in a few snow days and instruction time decreases accordingly. For NB3-21C to be successful, we will be examining our school calendar, instruction time allocations, lessons, activities, instruction, and learning environment in an effort to make every instruction minute engaging to and relevant for our students. Â
And at the same time, we know we need to strike the right balance between a student’s instruction time, and our teachers having the time to plan for instruction. Seeking the advice of our teachers on this issue will be critical to finding solutions.
Technology
The 21st Century Age of Knowledge is rooted in rapid advancements in information and communications technology. ICT facilitates access to information for every student via the internet. We intend to create ICT rich learning environments because students deserve to have access to the tools of their generation in the classroom.
NB3-21C’s focus is on producing creative problem solvers, being relevant to our students and using their time wisely. This will include creating ICT rich learning environments, where each student can access information at his or her own speed of learning.
